A resident shared this response regarding lighting in the temporary (5 years?) new vehicle lot on Hueneme Road:
In compliance with the law, we underwent a full seven-year permitting process, involving various stakeholders such as the Nature Conservancy, which vetted our lighting options, and the Southwinds Community Council, which requested increased lighting efficiency for community safety. As a result, the Port completed a full Environmental Impact Report and worked closely with the City of Oxnard and other residents to find appropriate lighting solutions. These solutions aim to improve safety in the area, meet the City of Oxnard Police Department’s safety requirements, and minimize impacts on biological resources (including migratory birds) and the environment.
The lighting on site will consist of mobile solar-powered trailers with LED lights, which will be motion-activated to minimize light pollution especially into the adjacent Nature Conservancy property and Ormond Habitat. These trailers will be removed once the Supplementary Use Permit (SUP) expires, which is anticipated to be five years after approval.
Additionally, we have adopted procedures at the Port to light only the areas with active operations, except for security lighting. Lights have been upgraded to LED to meet stringent safety standards for workers at the Port.
We hope this information is helpful and look forward to sharing more improvements in and around our shared city while continuing to enjoy our night sky!
